We should not "protect' inefficient industries with trade barriers as they keep prices high and limit prosperity. The Phoenix Center estimates that every year one federal regulatory employee cuts GDP by $6.2 million, eliminates 98 private sector jobs and destroys the economic output of 134 people. America's regulatory infrastructure costs are $1.75 trillion per year, according to a study from the Federal Government's Small Business Administration's Office of Advocacy. That is more than the annual gross domestic product of Canada. Dr. Mary Ruwart, reports the average federal regulator kills 150 jobs every year; hence every regulator eliminated represents 150 new jobs per year in the US! As subject matter expert, the freed regulator, benefits by getting a better job by having her/his pick of the new 150 jobs created.
